ContentsChapter II
The Chess Is Real

Real chess against a real chess program, and 5,890 checkmate puzzles that were each checked by machine.
Nothing here is faked.
When another game gives you a chessboard, it is usually a bluff — a script, a short list of canned replies, an opponent who loses in ways that never quite add up. This is not that. Every game you play in Casteria is real chess, against a real chess program, and every opponent plays at a fixed strength you can see.
The engine
It is Stockfish 18 — the strongest free chess program in the world, the one people use to analyse their own games. Pocket Pawns runs it exactly as it ships, with nothing changed. It is the same file the engine’s own authors put out, sitting inside the game.
Every opponent has a real rating
The weakest opponent in the game plays at 1. The strongest plays at 2,700. Everyone in between plays at the number the game says they do — when it says an opponent plays 250, it means 250. They hang pieces. They miss mates. That is what a beginner actually looks like, and it is what a fair first game looks like too.
The mistakes are real, and never scripted. Beating them is real chess.
| Opponent plays | Share of moves that are random |
|---|---|
| 250 | ~50% |
| 400 | ~40% |
| 600 | ~29% |
| 750 | ~21% |
Choose how hard you want it
There are six difficulty settings, and the two hardest have to be earned by finishing the game first. Whichever you pick sets everything: how strong every opponent is, and how many moves deep the puzzles go.
| Setting | Strength range | |
|---|---|---|
| Pawnling | You have never played chess. | 1 – 400 |
| Squire | The normal way to play. | 100 – 1,000 |
| Adept | Stronger opponents, deeper puzzles. | 300 – 1,400 |
| Master | No easy opponents anywhere. | 550 – 1,800 |
| Grandmaster | Unlocked by finishing the game once. | 1,300 – 2,000 |
| Regicide | Unlocked by finishing everything. | 2,000 – 2,700 |
the catch puzzles
5,890 checkmates, every one checked by machine.
Every wild piece you meet sets you a checkmate puzzle instead of a fight. The positions come from real games, and every one was checked by the engine to prove the checkmate is definitely there, in exactly the number of moves it says. Find it and the piece joins you. There is no luck in it, no catch rate, and nothing to roll for.
- 2,290Mate in one
- 1,600Mate in two
- 900Mate in three
- 600Mate in four
- 500Mate in five
The further along you get, the deeper the puzzles you are given. The first pieces you ever catch are all mate in one.
chess away from the story
You can also just sit down and play.
None of the journey is required. The Puzzle Explorer opens the entire bank of 5,890 and lets you work through it by depth or by the name of the pattern — a clock if you want one, none if you do not. It loads no save and pays nothing — it is pure practice, where mistakes cost nothing.
There is one puzzle a day, the same one for every player, with nothing at stake but your streak. The Simul Hall runs timed rushes — ten checkmates against the clock, from ten mate-in-ones in a minute up to ten mate-in-fives in nine. And then there is the one in the park:
Twelve boards under the autumn leaves in Rookwood, and you are not a player at one of them. You are the exhibitor at all twelve. You walk the line; each opponent only moves when you arrive, takes one move from you, and you carry on down the row.— Chess in the Park, a real simultaneous exhibition
never played before?
There is a difficulty built for you, and its first opponents play at a strength of 1 — because your first ever game of chess should be one you win.
A short lesson plays before you start, and the title menu holds the whole course — five chapters that go from the names of the squares to castling, en passant, promotion and what a piece is actually worth. The two are the same curriculum, so they always agree. After that, the University teaches the rest — 202 classes.
The free demo is the first part of the game — two towns, Openfield and Frostford, and the road between them. Everything you catch there carries straight into the full game.
